A story of Eve and the old woman

Eve

Eve arrives at the village sweating all over, dropped her bagpack to the ground and look at the time.

"Thank God it's only 3 o'clock", she thought. She needs to do what her heart tells her.

"I need to find a place to stay, this is hard but this is what i want to do, this is what i'm here for", she thought again, this time with higher spirit. She recognized this spirit, it's the same spirit she had when she was sitting in front of her boss and told him she is resigning on a 24 hours notice.

____________________________________________________________________

The old woman

"Oh..i'm staying at home today Emma, so many chores to do around here, the dishes, the sweeping, I have delayed cleaning the kitchen for more than a month now", said the old woman, clutching her hands together, she has a heavy heart saying no to invitations, in fact she is not used to saying no.

"Oh..i thought you never miss doing your chores?", said Emma, her hands on her forehead, covering her eyes from the sunrays.

"I didn't sleep well last night, usually i've finished all the housework by 10 o'clock but today i..ehmm..overslept", said the old woman, somewhat appeared like she is lying.

They waved each other goodbye as Emma started to walk away. In her mind, she could not wait to hear Mrs. William's story. Or gossip.

She didn't exactly lie to Emma, she didn't sleep well because she had the strangest dream.

In her dream, there were three men chasing her in the jungle, the men were wearing their traditional garments, she didn't recognized the tribal group but she knows they were going to kill her if she is caught. She was running but her feet could not bear her much speed. While running, she turned her head to see the men, they were closer to her now.

Then without warning she was already standing on a bridge, she dived into a sea and swam to the middle of the sea where the depth is greater. She was in much fear, afraid of the creatures under the sea, afraid of something might pull her legs and she will be underwater for a long time and eventually die.

That did not happen instead she saw herself standing in front of thousands of people, she was giving a speech and she had finished, everyone applaused, amazed by her speech and the spirit behind the speech. She was the woman in her dream, only at that time, she was much younger.

Before the dream ended, she was told by a voice to wait.

She remembers the voice, for no apparent reason, somehow she feels the voice is telling her to wait at home today. She is not certain, but the old woman believes in the mysteries of the heart. Furthermore, she is tired from last night's 'adventure'.

This is the part where she didn't tell Emma. For her, Emma, Doris, Mrs. William and Jim's wife do not have to know about this thing because they do not understand about the mysteries of the heart.

The meeting

The old woman is busy sweeping the leaves in her backyard, thanks to the three mango trees she grows. She has the mango trees for the last 8 years. She makes the best mango pie in the village. During the fruit festival down town, she sells many different sizes of mango pie. Almost all people in the village especially the twins Johnny and Freddy, love the pie so much. Each can never finish even one slice but they still want more. "Enthusiasm of children", she thought.

"Hello, hi there, good evening maam", said Eve. The old woman is startled to see the girl.

"Good evening, where do you come from?", asked the old woman. Surprised by the sudden greet.

"Oh, i'm from Asia, Borneo, have you heard of Borneo?", said Eve. She's praying hard in her heart that she would not be rejected at the first trial to find a place to stay.

"And you're here for?", the old woman asked. She didn't mean to sound rude, just curious.

"I was at your front yard, I saw you here, i called you but you didn't hear me, so i decided to greet you here at your back yard. I didn't mean to be rude and intrude your compound. My name is Eve, i'm from Malaysia. I'm on a long holiday trip. I like adventure and on this trip, I'd like to do things out of the ordinary. Like for example instead of staying in a hotel or a motel or in a guesthouse, I'd like to stay in a local's house. Why? Because i would really like to know the culture and the people", explained Eve. She had rehearsed that in her mind many times before.

"Oh", the old woman is still digesting the long explanation.

"Are you alone or are there more people with you?", she asked.

"I'm alone, this is my solo trip", said Eve. She is filled with hope.

"So, you want to stay in my house?", asked the old woman.

"Yes, if that is okay with you and your family", said Eve, asking for permission.

The old woman thought, "she looks like an honest girl, but looks can deceive".

"I know this sounds strange. It's entirely up to you, I won't force you to accept me in your house. If you need more time to think about this and discuss with your family, I can wait here", said Eve and looked at her watch, it's 5.30 in the evening and prays hard in her heart.

Like wind rush from nowehre, like lightning struck the earth in high speed, like love at first sight, the old woman's heart is captured when she heard the word 'wait'. She remembers the voice in her dream.

"Could this be related?", she thought, hoping for an answer, she is curious.

"It is almost night time, if not here, this girl will still go door to door and ask the same question, is she doesn't find any house that will accept her, then she would end up at Natty's Inn. Then it would defeat the whole purpose of her adventurous trip", thought the old woman.

What she's really doing is putting reasoning to her intuition. As if the heart is not trustworthy that the logical mind has to support it.

"Come on in, i'll prepare dinner", said the old woman.

Itchy Feet

My desire is set to step onto a new horizon, places i'm not familiar with, i often imagined that. There were mixed emotions of freedom, happiness, thankful and also fear. Walking with my bagpack on my back and maybe a map. I'd like to be prepared whenever i travel, at least for the first 2 or 3 days. It's what i called calculated risk. Prepared in terms of which area to go and where to stay. And i especially like to stay in a place where one can see many characters that shape that particular place. I used to think that a quiet place will help me to be alert of my surrounding but... i think i'm wrong, it seems i'm more alert to my ownself. I hate that kind of self-conscious. At times i laugh because of the irony of it. But now i notice that im getting better in eliminating this habit.

Going to loud and happening places often help me to be less self-conscious. I've gone to Khao San road twice, everybody seems to have their own agenda although everyone pretty much heading to the same bars, same food stalls, standing packed in a group. That was the best time to just sit on the sidewalk coffee stall and just watch people and feel the town's energy and that is just one agenda. I always find these things interesting to do:

  • Walking as far as i can and enjoy the scenery, people, business etc (but i always ended up with sore ankles! hukhuk)
  • Talking to the locals (especially those wth out of the ordinary jobs like a waitress@ tut tut girl, it's always interesting to know their why, when, how etc)
  • Going to unfamiliar and infamous places where you get to see the other side of the country
  • Bars, i especially like Bangla road in phuket (you get to see who rule the scene and who's the victims)
  • Waterfalls (well i like water, coolness, nature and good sound = waterfall)
  • Look for the best pizza in town..woohoo!
  • Go to their supermarkets!

Thing that i'd like to do that i never try before (fun fun) is live in a local's house preferably in a village, cook with them, eat with them, chat with them etc yeehaa!

Usually i can only afford to take 5 days leave, plus 2 or 3 days on weekend, makes a great bagpacking trip but of course it's not enough. There are just so many to see and do. How beautiful it is to constantly see a new horizon. My friend said 'you will never achieve anything stable if you constantly move around or travel too much'. I disagree. But if it's true then let me taste it. Let me make mistakes and correct it, honestly.

Anyway, after all the bagpacking and new horizon, it always back to boring routines and sometimes stupid rules. And after a while, i'll have itchy feet again....

Oh how beautiful it is to constantly see a new horizon...

Amazing Work Done!

Amazingly and astonishingly done, this piece of work is very detailed, perfect and shiny! I can imagine the persons whose making it must be a very creative one. We asked a shop owner of this 'iron men' miniature, he said his friend made it. Sounds like the friend made it at the back of his house..maybe ada yg buat sendiri or buat di kilang...can a machine do this? i dont think so la..

FUN IN THE SUN

Day 1 - Today is 8 March. A dream came true today. I've always travelled in a group, but what is it like to travel alone or duo? I've asked myself that question and have planned to make it come true. "Thit it it" as the Thai would say it ( most can't pronounce s very well) or "This is it"! The plan is to travel duo 1st then alone. This time i travelled duo with my twin-sister a.k.a my tazmanian sister, Mandy .

Dedication to the other gangs: Didn't mean at all to opt out u guys, but this i'd like to do duo and not in a group. This is my travelling plan. Besides we have manila trip waiting for us in 2 months time!! woohooo!!

Sawadeekap.....the man behind the counter greeted me when i handed my passport and asked me to stand about a feet away from the immigration counter for the camera to capture my face. Why do i always get my baggage last? We were the last persons to get out from the baggage area. With about 3 free maps and brochures of Phuket with us, we headed to the most right end of the airport for the metered taxi. The guesthouse we booked advised us to take the metered taxi rather than the airport limo which costs us about 700-800 baht, that's about RM70 or more (RM1 = 9.6baht). Yes we saved 250baht today for the taxi to Patong Beach.

Patong beach is the busiest part of Phuket in terms of entertainment, food, people, malls, shows etc compared to other beaches. The scenery is none other than bars be it big or small, thai food and seafood outlets, massage outlets, malls, money changer, local shopping stalls, street food, u can find fastfood everywhere like McD, BK, KFC, ice cream parlours like Swensens, Hagen Daaz etc. It's a long list....! Patong is the centre of fun and entertainment in Phuket.

We arrived in Patong as early as 8am, it takes only 1 hr 15 mins to get to Phuket from KL. Early and tired from the stay up last nite in LCCT lobby (Tune Hotel is not up and run yet grrr). Fortunately, Phil allowed us put our bags in the guesthouse 1st before we can check in at 12pm (it's actually 2pm but Phil is so nice to let us in 2 hours earlier). Adonis Guesthouse is located in Patong area, i dont know the name of the street but it is just near the Royal Paradise Hotel. Phil upgraded our stay from deluxe room to studio room which is very very convenient. Everything is in the room including bathtub muahahha!

If you're tired, thai food is a must, i had my 1st meal in phuket i.e. beef noodle soup in No.6 Restaurant. Sedapsss but ada tauge..paduli sa yg penting sedap. Remember guys No. 6 Restaurant. A simple restaurant but the food is great and the service is super fast! Continued the day with jalan-jalan to get a feel of the area. Where is the beach? Haven't seen the beach yet. Both of us were very tired and sleepy now, we can only last the jalan2 until 11am so we decided to look for the beach later and brroooomm brroommm back to Adonis. Wow we can check in already and its not even 12.

zzzz....slept until 5pm (i guess) thai time..so that's 6pm m'sia time. TV was the 1st thing in mind, so many channels but most of them in Thai...and no sub-title! There are 3 movie channels only 1 in english the rest were translated to thai..i guess the TV authority does not think tourists would want to watch TV while in phuket. Hmmm tiapalah...Can't remember where we had our dinner on this nite..u remember ka dik? ko tau la sa ni bangas mungkin memory sa.. I remember buying microwavable food from 7-E hmmm...anyway i know i had food since i survived the nite hehehe...The nite scene is colourful with all the neon lights. Ah now i remember we had thai food in a local stall, nice tom yum goong! Yes i remember now, we tried to find the night market in Soi Sai Namyen but couldnt find it. Actually we had to just turn right from the traffic lite, but when we reached the traffic lite, we didnt know where to go so we headed back. Hmmm..that's what Napoleon Hill said 'dont stop cos u r an inch away from the gold'..pa bulih buat la.
On our way back, there was a bar which played good songs so we stopped by and had a couple of Chang beer before we continue our jalan-jalan. Besides Patong beach, there are other beaches like Kata, Karon, Kamala, Nai Harn etc. It is definitely worth to go to Kata and Karon which i will tell u guys in my next post. Till then..

Weekend Away in Sukau

After 4 days outstationing in Kg. Gana, Kota Marudu, i drove my car a.k.a mimi to Sukau last friday nite. It was not an easy drive because in the middle of driving, i was fishing fish in the air, in other words sangat mengantuk! Managed hard to stay awake and reached Sukau at about 1030pm. Joni, 4D (in the pic) and Yong were err.. dont know what they were doing when i arrived. But i arrived not only with my bagpack but also with 2 packs of guava juice, 2 bottles of white tanduay rhum and 1 bag of ice cubes, that makes us the popular cocktail drink MINDORO SLING, a trademark concoction of Puerto Galera! During our last trip to Puerto, we sure had a lot of that sling and bing! As usual our bartender in Sukau is none other than Mr. 4D himself lol! Had 4 jugs of slings that nite, it's been a long time since i last hang out with Joni and 4D. Yong was busy that weekend as her family of 15 came over for holiday. Big family Yong! Oh Yong's mum cooked very nice vegetables (adakah kerna lapar?) Oh oh our pusas that nite - mussels.. ai lain, i.e hasil belian di Kota Marudu. Chatted about Natt's wedding and how we are going to get a good band on her wedding days, about how to make money, about each other's updates and so on until 3am zzz....
Lots of fish caught by Yong's (in the pic) family on saturday in Sukau River, those are the 2 biggies, walaupun bukan sa yang pancing, merasa juga pegang ikan basar! Hohoho... Oh there's a new lodge built in Sukau, operating since 3 weeks ago, just beside Sukau River, about RM35/pax/nite (with breakfast). What you can do in Sukau? You can no doubt do river cruising be it nite cruise (5pm) or early morning cruise (6am), fishing is another one, and if you are 'green' people, you can contribute to KAPOK organisation by buying native tree species seedlings from them and they will organise a tree planting session with you in the forests, will be very interesting and fun and jungle rumble! KAPOK consists of several villages in Kinabatangan whom are committed to plant trees for forests rehabilitation in Kinabatangan area. Oh! and not forgetting, you can meet eyes to eyes with Frankie the crocodile, he always around near the river banks. You can see him especially when you hang out at Cede Prudente's Tomanggong Lodge, which is very near to Joni's house. So come on guys be adventurous, be green, go to Sukau!

Travelling Differently

When i read this, i said 'wow! I agree with this and this hmm not this one'...Let's see some of the travelling-differently-lessons from Paulo's Like The Flowing River.

1. Avoid museums
If you are in a foreign city, what is more interesting, searching the present or the past? Obviously, museums are important but they require time and objectivity - you need to know what you want to see, otherwise you'll thought that you've seen important things, but actually you can't remember what they were.

Comments: I still go to museum, but i prefer zoo hmmm espc. unique-looking ones. Still, these 2 will be last resorts in any travelling plan. But what's interesting to visit is the Killing Field Museum in Phnom Penh. Let's do it pengulu gang!

2. Hang out in bars
Bars are the places where life in the city reveals itself, not in museums. By bars, i don't mean discotheques, but the places where ordinary ppl go have a drink, ponder the weather, and are always ready for a chat. Buy a newspaper. If someone strikes up a conversation, however silly, join in! You cannot judge the beauty of a particular path just by looking at the gate.

Comments:
Bar? Hah, always!

3. Be open
The best tour guide is someone who lives in the place, knows everything about it, proud of her/his city but does not work for any agency.
Comments: Cautious as well for con-man/woman oh and those who you met in bars and actually work there.

4. Try to travel alone or - if you're married-with your spouse
It will be harder, no one will be there taking care of u but only in this way can you truly leave your country behind. Travelling with a group is a way of being in a foreign country while speaking your mother tongue, doing whatever the leader of the group tells u to do and more interested in group gossip than in the place you're visiting.
Comments: I've thought about travelling alone or with my partner, i'm sure it'll be so much mixed feelings of fun, panic, cautious and proud (in a good way).

5. Don't compare
Don't compare anything - prices, standards of hygiene, quality of life, means of transport, nothing! You are not travelling in order to prove that you have a better life than other ppl. Your aim is to find out how other ppl live, what they can teach you, how they deal with reality and with the extraordinary.
Comments: I once met with 2 ladies from UK who've been assigned by their boss to go to a very remote spot in Kalimantan for work - 3 nights plus 4 days travelling to and fro by 4WD and boat. We met up for dinner and all the way dinner, they complaint, and i could not believe my ears when they compared Kalimantan with UK! They even compared Asian breakfast and English's. What the hell was that? So a'ah no no compare.

6. Understand that everyone understands you.
Even if you don't speak the language, don't be afraid. Some ppl think that if they travel alone, they will be lost and be lost forever. Just make sure you got the hotel card with you. If worst comes to the worst - flag down a taxi and show the card to the driver.
Comments: If you stay in backpackers lodge, they dont have hotel card. So get the exact address.

7. Dont buy too much
Spend your money on things you wont need to carry - tickets to a good play or match, restaurants, trips. Nowadays, with global economy and the internet, you can buy almost anything without having to pay excess baggage.
Comments: I agree but still i buy stuffs..lol. This caused me a frustrating 'poket belubang' experience till i can't do what i so much want to do - watch a live Muay Thai boxing match. Hukhuk..

8. Dont try to see the world in a month
It's far better to stay in a city for 4 or 5 days than to visit 5 cities in a week. A city is like a capricious woman: she takes time to be seduced and to reveal herself completely.
Comments: Visited 4 cities in 12 days in 2005, punya men panat! Yeah don't do this, it's stupid.

9. A journey is an adventure
Henry Miller used to say that it's far more important to discover a church that no one else has ever heard of, than going to Rome and feel obliged to visit Sistine Chapel with 200,000 other tourists yelling in your ear. By all means, go to Sistine Chapel, but wander the streets too, explore alleyways, experience the freedom of looking something - quite you dont know, but if you find it, will, you can be sure, change your life.

Comments: My close friend, Joni, treat her holiday as an adventure. Whenever she tells a story of her journey, it's something unfamiliar but it never fail to amaze me. Got the priviledge to join her in the adventure and yeah i enjoyed myself so much! Let's do it again Jons.

Travelling Light

How do we feel belong to that country when we travel? I always like to find a specific place or an area to hang out and just be a 'local'. Aren't we all do?! I thought so. In Bangkok, Khao San Road is a street that is filled with bacpackers lodges, shops, food stalls, shirt stalls, illegal roti canai stalls, bar stalls, pad thai stalls, breakdancers, internet cafes, bars etc etc. Just like Bangsar in KL, Malate in Manila, Bar Street in Siem Reap and Kuta in Bali. Nevertheless, apart from all the busy-ness of the tourist place, it's nice to just hang out in a small cafe and watch the busy-ness, watch the locals talking and negotiating, order their local drinks and food and of course hang out with one of the great people in my life i.e. close friends. I read Paulo's Like The Flowing River, he has a very fine opinion on how we should travel and i agree with him most of the time. Will write about it in my next post. I include here khaosan link, for infos and perhaps for your next travelling plan.

Went to Bangkok with Joni, 4D and Clever last August. Had lots of fun, did lots of walking and sight seeing, took lots of photos, quite a lot of eating and drinking etc. This was my 2nd time to Bangkok and i recommend you to go, it's a safer place and quieter than manila. 2nd Day (11 July) - First timer in Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) and as MGK9's

Huargghhh woke up at 8 i think... got a good warm shower and man! the breakfast was fantastic! i always enjoy a good variety of breakfast. Love to make my choices on food..well that's why im a large-O. Anyway, we planned to head for SCV today just to get the feel around and of course (well actually) to have our free lunch! yeah the organiser prepared lunches for every single person who is attached to RWMF as volunteer..oh as well as bfasts and dinners oh and suppers.... superb!

Hang out 4 a while with Silvanus at the entrace who flew from Singapore to be part of the MGK9. I think it was his 2nd time here if im not mistaken.. Dam* we could not enter cos' we havent got the wrist band from Leo (MGK9's big boss)...bebunyi perut geng...lapar

An hour later, Leo came with the cute wristbands and by this time my stomach really made a grumbling sound..grumbling kelaparan. Should've listened to Mel B about the wrist bands tp ko pun nda firm, camana? Hehehe..jan jua marah.

Really-really glad to be in SCV... after lunch we pun jalan-jalan and we discovered:

  • Rumah melanau yang saaaaaangat besar dan tinggi, we got in and wow, really superb. Tapi ada satu bilik yg banyak bantal dan tilam but there was no way in jadi peeking thru the wall seja..
the melanau house, tu nah sa baru bgn buka tingkap rumah....
huarggghhh...baru bangun eheks!
  • Rupa-rupanya ada lagi yg lebih besar i.e orang ulu long house..didnt get in hehe
  • Coffee bean stall... pa lagi di serbu terus kerana these 4 ppl from KK adalah peminat coffeebean..
  • Ada arabic food stall..
  • A very hot day...but people are still interested to be in SCV especially to join the music workshop...
  • The main stage area was still under construction and maintenance... geez
  • Heineken is the co-sponsor of RWMF
2.30pm: Brrpp... we had our lunch at the mango tree.. it's not literally a mango tree. The food stall where organiser and volunteers eat n drink is called The Mango Tree. Ok fellas..let's go back to our room and have some rest n sleep b4 the big event tonite...

4.30pm: Hup hup! Beraksi di main entrance...menjaga crown dan beg2 mereka sekali...haha! It's funny to see their reactions over the security rules. Some of them were cool when we HAVE to check their bags, some were just so defensive like we are some kind of police or private investigator..some just curious what we were looking for in their bags. Well, basically no outside food and drinks are allowed in the premise, n also perhaps some of crowds may bring in weird and dangerous stuffs. But all is good.

Highlight at 8.30pm: Our PM and his wife were also in the event and they must really like international concert since they stayed in for the whole 1st day concert...i think they left at around 11.30pm... Sarawak CM were with them all the time of course.

1.30am: Punya penaaat kaki ini....and mengantuk..Off to the resort...

2.00am: zzzzzz........

Rainforest World Music Festival ‘The RWMF’

I’ve written a short one on this but mel b n ladybird said its too short. Actually I felt it is too short too so here goes….

1st Day (10 July) – Travelling downsouth to other part of BorneoKuching here we come!

Well we were actually going to Santubong, the place of heaps and happenings.. heap Mount Santubong indeed! Yes, Santubong is the place you want to be annually sometime in July. Sarawak Cultural Village located in Santubong is a very very nice place and with RWMF on, it is definitely a colourful surroundings. Mandy, Lyn, Mel B n I were actually invited by our Miri friend to become volunteers in the RWMF as the security of the event wooohoo! Attached with MGK9 company for 3 days as a security taking care of the whole event and area, I had great fun and felt privileged (still do) to be part of the team. I’m sure Mandy, Lyn n Mel feel the same! Come on guys say something.

OK It's 11 sumting.... Hello hello Santubong!! What a nice place to be.. but what a weird looking lobby for such a nice resort... astaga patutlah, the cab stopped in front of the event hall pula, so we had to walk a bit to reach the lobby but it was ok... WOW nicely decorated! we are really in the RWMF area. 30 minutes later, we met with ladybird, friend from miri..a very cool lady. Ok lapar la pulak...we headed for lunch which was good, nothing special (it's hotel food) but still they were all tasty. Hmmm...i have the habit to tell my story according to what really happened... but basically after lunch:
  • checked in the room...big room with 2 big beds for 4 of us, Lyn, mandy, mel n me..

on the way to the lobby for some action after checking in..
  • played pool n beering
